Sustainable garments for sophisticated soirees

Tis the season for sequins, silk, and a sophisticated number. Springing into the new year in a totally outrageous party outfit is the best way to set the precedent that 2023 will well and truly be 12 months in your favour. Yet shopping for a party outfit can be tricky. Furthermore, with sustainability being an a hot topic in the fashion space, We all know that one-hit-wonders aren't the best use of wardrobe space, nor are they a sustainable choice.

This exact conundrum and our growing desire to integrate affordable and responsible consumption has been a major driving force behind the rise of rental platform services such as By Rotation and HURR. Above all else, renting provides a unique opportunity to strutt your stuff in a high fashion garment at a fraction of the market price. With the online fashion market predicted to grow over 10 per cent annually, looking fabulous is set to be more sustainable than ever!

So what should you actually rent? When first embarking on sifting through popular rental platforms, I was positively surprised to find the overwhelming amount of choice available. In response to the sheer amount of choice on offer on these online platforms, the Carpe Denim team decided to put their research to practical use to bring you our edit of the top brands listed on the rental site HURR, and the pieces that you should have your eye on!

16Arlington

Cult fashion brand 16Arlington has made its debut onto fashion rental platform HURR. The product of partners Marco Capaldo and Federica ‘Kikka’ Cavenati, the British brand made its London Fashion Week debut in 2020, just three years following its inception. The label captivates the power of combining minimalism and maximalism in collections, with the brand, in Capaldo’s words designed for women “with an attitude.” Some of our favourite pieces available to rent include: The Solaria Sequin Maxi Dress as seen in their Fall 22 collection; The Opala Floral Crystal Shirt and the Adelaide Asymmetric Dress.

Miaou

Initially founded as a Denim company, Miaou has since stretched its collection to become largely associated with its daring corset going out tops. As seen on the likes of Hailey Bieber and Julia Fox, the flattering yet funky designs of Miaou’s corsets means that it is a piece that can be styled with a simple trouser or skirt option. What’s not to love!

Simone Rocha

For Irish Fashion designer Simone Rocha, maximalism has always been at the forefront of her collections, with her love for voluminous silhouettes, pearls and tulle exuding a strong sense of femininity. Rocha’s scooping of the British Womenswear Designer Award at the BFA’s in 2016 solidified her status as one of the most talented designers of her generation. HURR has a generous collection of her garments and accessories on offer, with our favourite being this embroidered and crochet dress.

The Vampire’s Wife

Susie Cave, founder and creative director of The Vampire’s Wife, described The Vampire’s Wife creations as ones synonymous with ‘subversive synonymity.’ Her collections are almost bewitching, making gothic haute couture look effortlessly glamorous. The brand has been praised by British Vogue, with their signature dress voted by them as ‘The Dress of 2018.’

Staud

Sarah Staudinger, the former Fashion Director of Reformation launched STAUD in 2015 with her partner George Augusto. Since then, the brand has grown to become a favourite of fashion’s ‘it’ girls, worn by the likes of Alexa Chung and Leandra Medine. HURR has a vast range of pieces on offer, with their feathered dresses a truly ferocious party fit!
